Join the 3rd Base4NFDI User Conference in Berlin (November 24–25)

How can shared research data management services become truly useful for diverse research communities? How can generic infrastructure services be integrated into disciplinary workflows? And what does sustainable operation of such services look like in practice?
 
These questions are at the heart of the 3rd Base4NFDI User Conference (UC4B2026), which will take place at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – Haus Potsdamer Straße on November 24–25. The conference brings together Base4NFDI, its funded basic service teams, and the wider National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) community for two days of exchange, collaboration, and hands-on discussions.
 
For researchers, data stewards, infrastructure providers, and community representatives from the humanities and cultural studies, UC4B2026 offers an excellent opportunity to engage directly with services that are shaping the future of research data management in Germany.
 
This year’s programme focuses on practical exchange and strategic reflection. Participants can look forward to hands-on sessions, incubator presentations, and opportunities to showcase how basic services are being integrated into specific communities. The event will also address broader questions such as operating models, long-term sustainability, and the successful technical and organisational roll-out of services across the NFDI consortia.
 
A particular strength of UC4B2026 is its interactive format. Rather than simply presenting finished results, the conference invites participants to discuss needs, challenges, and possible paths towards broader adoption. This makes it especially relevant for communities in the humanities and cultural studies, where research data, methods, tools, and workflows are often highly diverse and context-dependent.
 
At its core, the conference aims to strengthen collaboration between basic service teams and NFDI consortia. It showcases the progress of Base4NFDI services while opening up space to discuss how shared infrastructure can support concrete research practices across disciplines.

Base4NFDI is an initiative of all 26 NFDI consortia. It develops, integrates, and operates shared basic services for research data management across the NFDI community. Existing services are adapted or extended to support researchers from different disciplines.

Registration for UC4B 2025 open until 1 August

We would like to kindly remind you of the upcoming BASE4NFDI User Conference 2025. This year’s UC4B 2025 will take place directly after CoRDI 2025 in Aachen from 28.-29. August 2025. 

The interactive programme gives the basic service teams the opportunity to present themselves, promote exchange with international experts and also report on the status of the Base4NFDI project. The central aim of the event is to promote cooperation between basic services teams and consortia. 

 

This year’s event is divided into three parts:

  • a dedicated Base4NFDI slot at the CoRDI conference (28. August)
  • a panel discussion directly following the CoRDI with a subsequent evening reception (28. August)
  • a focus day for the basic services, where they can come into contact with their users and those responsible for their implementation in an individual way (29. August)

Another highlight of the conference will be the keynote presentation by Rosie Hicks (Australian Research Data Commons). Registration is still open until 1. August 2025 and free of charge.

 

This year’s target groups are, of course, everybody interested in Base4NFDI and especially IT experts and affine members from all consortia.

1st Base4NFDI User Conference (20-21 November 2024 at Fraunhofer FOKUS, Berlin): Registration open, Abstracts published

Base4NFDI is an initiative that will develop and offer a set of common shared RDM enabling services to the NFDI community. Base4NFDI supports this via an iterative three-step process, allowing a participatory path to roll-out and, importantly, gaining consensus from the NFDI community along the way. Base4NFDI will have a number of basic services at different stages of technical fruition by November 2024. 

The aim of this two-day event is:

To showcase the basic services and allow the audience to understand the service offering, examine how they can integrate the service into the NFDI community, and critically evaluate what this means in real-terms in terms of technical interoperability and local policies. The interactive programme will cover aspects of the different services, get insights from the institutions who will support their take-up as well as issues such as alignment with other infrastructures both nationally and at European level.

Who is this conference aimed at:

  • Members of NFDI who are interested in consortia-wide buy-in to a particular service
  • Members of the NFDI community who are closely involved with the potential integration of the basic services within their consortia 
  • Those who wish to contribute to critical discussions on the development of the services and any respective challenges

What are the main goals and takeaways:

  • To get a better understanding and discuss the rollout of the current basic services and how they will manifest when they get to operational stage
  • Give the NFDI community a chance to comment on the services at their respective stages
  • A clearer analysis of how to commit to a service and what agreements need to be in place across consortia and respective institutions
  • What interoperability with EOSC actually means, how this applies to basic services and what components of the NFDI basic services can be offered at EOSC level
