Text+: Forschungsdateninfrastruktur für text- und sprachbasierte Forschung wird weiter ausgebaut

Die Gemeinsame Wissenschaftskonferenz (GWK) hat am 10. Juli 2026 die Förderung der Forschungsdateninfrastruktur „Text+“ für zwei weitere Jahre mit insgesamt rund sechs Millionen Euro beschlossen. Neue mitantragstellende Einrichtung ist die Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen (SUB Göttingen). Sie übernimmt damit für die Universität Göttingen die Verantwortung für die finanzielle, organisatorische und strategische Weiterentwicklung des Vorhabens.

 

In der zweiten Förderphase von Text+ soll die in den vergangenen Jahren aufgebaute Forschungsdateninfrastruktur für text- und sprachbasierte Forschungsdaten weiterentwickelt, verstetigt und noch stärker in die wissenschaftliche Praxis integriert werden.

 

„Die Weiterförderung von Text+ ist ein starkes Signal für die Forschungsdateninfrastrukturen in Deutschland und für den Forschungsstandort Göttingen. Text- und sprachbezogene Daten sind ein wesentlicher Bestandteil unseres kulturellen Gedächtnisses und zugleich eine zentrale Grundlage für die Qualität von Sprachmodellen und Künstlicher Intelligenz. Zusammen mit den drei anderen NFDI-Konsortien der ‘Humanities@NFDI’-Gruppe können wir in der zweiten Förderphase die gemeinsam aufgebauten Strukturen festigen, unsere Angebote nachhaltig verankern und die Idee einer gemeinsamen ‘One NFDI’ vorantreiben“, erläutert der Sprecher für Text+, Prof. Dr. Philipp Wieder von der Universität Göttingen.

 

Der Fokus der zweiten Förderphase, beginnend ab Oktober 2026, liegt auf dem Betrieb einer stabilen und leistungsfähigen Infrastruktur, der Konsolidierung und Weiterentwicklung zentraler Dienste für das Forschungsdatenmanagement sowie der langfristigen Sicherung und Bereitstellung von Daten. Zugleich wird Text+ seine Angebote noch enger am Bedarf der wissenschaftlichen Communitys ausrichten und die Zusammenarbeit mit Partnern innerhalb und außerhalb der NFDI weiter vertiefen. Die FAIR-Data-Prinzipien zur Förderung einer offenen Nachnutzbarkeit von Forschungsdaten sind dabei zentral für das Angebot.

 

Die Nationale Forschungsdateninfrastruktur, mit der Bund und Länder seit 2019 den Aufbau verlässlicher Strukturen für den Umgang mit Forschungsdaten fördern, hat zum Ziel, Forschungsdaten aus allen Wissenschaftsbereichen langfristig zugänglich, interoperabel und nachnutzbar zu machen. Die Konsortien decken vielfältige Wissenschaftsdisziplinen ab: von Kultur- über Sozial-, Geistes- und Ingenieurwissenschaften bis hin zu Lebens- und Naturwissenschaften. Dazu arbeiten Fachcommunitys gemeinsam mit Universitäten, Bibliotheken, Rechenzentren, Archiven und weiteren Infrastruktureinrichtungen an Standards, Diensten und Beratungsangeboten für ein nachhaltiges Forschungsdatenmanagement.

 

Die Entscheidung zur Weiterförderung fällt in eine Phase, in der auch die NFDI insgesamt strategisch weiterentwickelt wird. Bund und Länder haben im Juli 2026 die Grundlage für eine langfristige Fortführung der NFDI über das Jahr 2028 hinaus beschlossen. Ziel ist eine stärker koordinierte, nachhaltige und leistungsfähige Forschungsdateninfrastruktur in Deutschland. Text+ wird dazu weiterhin einen wichtigen Beitrag für die geistes- und kulturwissenschaftliche Forschung leisten.

About the Project

The project ‘Hindu Temple Legends in South India’ is a long-term research project of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities within the framework of the Academies Programme of the German federal and state governments. It explores the temple legends of the South Indian city of Kanchipuram in their different forms of transmission and makes them accessible in a digital environment. At the core of the project is the production of digital editions of Sanskrit and Tamil texts, which are linked with a documentation of temple architecture, iconography, rituals and oral traditions and made accessible via the project’s digital platform KANCHI (implemented as an eXist-db web app).

The main base of the project is the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, with a branch office functioning in Pondicherry, India, in cooperation with the École française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO).

 

Responsibilities

  • Development and maintenance of web applications using eXist-db
  • Modelling, processing, and transformation of TEI-XML data
  • Design and implementation of REST interfaces
  • Web development with Python (Flask), Bootstrap, and jQuery following current web standards (HTML5, CSS)
  • Development of transformation pipelines using XSLT and XQuery
  • Scripting and automation with Python and Bash
  • Integration with Linked Open Data infrastructures
  • Documentation of code and development decisions to academic standards
  • Close collaboration with the project team in a collaborative development environment

 

Requirements

Essential

  • Completed university degree (Bachelor or equivalent) in Computer Science, Digital Humanities, Computational Linguistics or a related field
  • Solid knowledge of the following technologies and languages:
    • eXist-db (native XML web application development)
    • TEI-XML (modelling and encoding of humanities texts)
    • Python (especially Flask), JavaScript, XQuery, XSLT, Bash
    • Web development with Bootstrap, jQuery, HTML5, and CSS
    • Development of REST APIs
  • Experience with thorough software documentation and structured code management (e.g. Git)
  • Understanding of Linked Open Data (LOD) principles and the Semantic Web
  • Strong communication skills and experience with collaborative, team-based work

Desirable

  • Experience with the Oxygen XML Editor and the development of Oxygen frameworks
  • Expertise with AI-based approaches to process semi-structured texts
  • Linux server administration (deployment, system configuration, security)

KannadaLit4NLP: A comprehensive classical kannada literary dataset of Vachanas, Tripadis, and Kagga with scholarly interpretations for natural language processing

ABSTRACT

This article presents KannadaLit4NLP, a large-scale, machine-readable corpus of Kannada literary texts designed to support natural language processing (NLP) research for a low-resource language. The dataset comprises 24,746 literary verses from three major Kannada literary traditions-Vachanas (11th-19th century), Tripadis (16th century), and Kagga (20th century)-along with 22,369 corresponding interpretations curated from scholarly sources. The corpus captures linguistic, stylistic, and semantic variations across historical periods and literary forms. The dataset was developed through a systematic pipeline that included source identification, digitisation via optical character recognition (OCR), manual verification, and structured annotation. Each entry is organised in a structured format that includes the original verse, metadata (literary form, author, and source), and associated interpretation(s), enabling its use in tasks such as semantic textual similarity, textual entailment, information retrieval, and generative modelling. KannadaLit4NLP addresses the limited availability of culturally grounded Kannada datasets by providing a resource that integrates classical and modern literary content with interpretative annotations. The dataset can facilitate the development and evaluation of NLP models in areas such as semantic understanding, translation, and knowledge representation, while also supporting computational studies of literary and cultural texts. The dataset is made publicly available to encourage further research and reproducibility in Kannada NLP.

An Alchemical <em>Prima Materia</em> for the Digital Age: Making the Early Modern Latin Alchemical Prints (EMLAP) Dataset

ABSTRACT

This article documents the creation of EMLAP (Early Modern Latin Alchemical Prints), a machine-readable corpus of one hundred Latin alchemical printed works produced within the TOME (The Origins of Modern Encyclopaedism, 2023-2025) project. It first situates the corpus within both the digital humanities landscape and the historiography of alchemy, where the availability of reliable machine-readable texts remains limited. It then addresses the challenges of converting early modern Latin printed text into machine-readable format with a high standard of quality. The article argues that producing a high-quality transcribed corpus at scale still requires human scholarly intervention, and that a transcription project must balance the ideal of digital edition standards against the practical constraints of time and resources. The article describes the practical experience of building EMLAP: the selection of the Transkribus platform for AI-powered automatic text recognition, the choice of transcription models, the development of human quality standards to complement automated metrics, and the construction of a computational pipeline to process and enrich the transcriptions. The EMLAP corpus has been made publicly available in open access (Zenodo repository) as well as in the form of a website that offers different search opportunities for researchers.

Drift 10 welcomes Data School, Data Management & Privacy, ILS Labs, and ArtLab

This year, Data School, the Data Management & Privacy team, ILS Labs, and several members of ArtLab are moving to Drift 10 in Utrecht, joining the Centre for Digital Humanities (CDH), of which they are part.

The process of bringing more CDH teams together at Drift 10 is steadily taking shape. In recent weeks, Data School and the Data Management & Privacy team have begun settling into their new offices. Data School is moving to room 2.01 at Drift 10, while the Data Management & Privacy team will be based in room 3.10. Several members of ArtLab will also have workspaces at Drift 10.

They join the Research Software Lab, Humanities IT, and most of the CDH core team, who are already located at Drift 10.

The ILS Labs are also in the process of relocating to Drift 10. Once their move from Janskerkhof 13 is completed, the basement, ground floor, and first floor of Drift 10 will house two biolabs, two eye-tracking labs, three phonetics/general-purpose labs, an interaction lab, and a head-turn-preference lab.

The CDH is delighted that this development will bring more of its units together under one roof. While collaboration between the teams is already well established, sharing the same location will create even more opportunities for informal exchange and knowledge sharing.

With these moves, a long-held dream of the CDH is becoming a reality: bringing together most of its teams in a single location.

Last Walk-in Hour on 25 June – Resuming on 17 September

Do you have a question related to digital humanities? The final Digital Humanities (DH) Walk-in Hour of Spring 2026 will take place on Thursday, 25 June, 2026. These weekly consultation sessions will resume on 17 September.

During the walk-in hour, our digital humanities specialist can advise you on topics such as data analysis using R or Python, creating datasets, the technical component of your research (funding) proposal, finding suitable existing research software, and optimising your self-written code, among others.

All teachers, researchers, staff and students at the Faculty of Humanities of Utrecht University are welcome to drop by. No appointment is needed.

Evania Fasya joins CDH

The Research Software Lab and the Portal Development team welcome developer Evania Fasya to their team. With her background in psychology and human-computer interaction, she brings fresh perspectives to the CDH.

Fasya holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Information Systems and Human-Media Interaction at the University of Indonesia and University of Twente. Through these studies, she gained experience in creating computer systems that support organisations, as well as designing technology that improves interaction between people and digital systems.

Recently, she defended her PhD thesis at the University of Twente, in collaboration with Leiden University. Her research focused on the social effects of behaviors conveyed in social interaction between humans and virtual humans. This research provided experience in experimental research, including data analysis and journal publications.

What Fasya brings to the team

At the Centre for Digital Humanities, Fasya will work in both the Portal Development team and the Research Software Lab.

She can support you with:

  • programming for information retrieval, virtual reality, software/web applications using Python or C#

Together with statistical advisor Kirsten Schutter, she can also assist with:

Call for Contributions to the 3rd Base4NFDI User Conference (UC4B2026)

Background and Scope
Today, research data is still often distributed across numerous repositories, hard to locate, and available only for a limited time. The NFDI seeks to improve the findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability (FAIRness) of research data.
Within this framework, Base4NFDI integrates and establishes Basic Services – shared, interoperable solutions that address cross-disciplinary needs. Existing services are being adapted and extended to support researchers from other domains, helping to avoid redundant developments and foster sustainable, community-driven infrastructures. The long-term goal is to shape, together, the evolving service portfolio that Base4NFDI contributes both to the NFDI ecosystem and to the broader RDM landscape together.

The Base4NFDI User Conference (UC4B) has become a central forum for presenting, discussing, and operationalizing current developments in Base4NFDI-funded services, fostering exchange on incubator projects, community integration efforts, and strategic service topics across the NFDI. This year marks the third edition of the conference.
The 2026 program welcomes contributions from across the NFDI and beyond. Members of consortia, sections, working groups, basic service teams, and external initiatives are invited to participate and share their ideas and experiences as well as best practices.

Call for Contributions
We invite the submission of abstracts showcasing activities related to Base4NFDI and basic services in the context of the NFDI.

Possible types of contributions:

Incubator Presentations: Base4NFDI Service Incubators are an efficient way to test, prepare, and enable the integration of basic services into NFDI consortia. We invite reports from incubators in every state showcasing their added value. We especially encourage presentations that tell the story behind a challenge, the approach taken, and the lessons learned in an easy-to-follow manner. Possible aspects include: what community RDM problem the incubator project aims to solve, the motivation for establishing the incubator project, preparatory steps, collaboration between consortia and basic service teams, and the specific benefits emerging from these partnerships.
Accepted contributions are expected to be allocated approximately 15 minutes including time for discussions; the final program may vary depending on the number of accepted submissions.
Talks: A broader slot for short, accessible presentations in the plenary. Possible topics include but are not limited to:
– User stories beyond basic service incubators
– How basic services solved disciplinary or consortia challenge
– How basic services encouraged data sharing across communities
– Operating models for basic services
– Identified cross-cutting needs and potentially missing basic services
– Insights and synergies from/with services outside the NFDI
Posters: The most inclusive category, addressing all topics related to basic services. Submissions are encouraged from consortia, sections, basic service teams and external initiatives alike. Accepted posters will be presented in a one-minute madness session during the conference.

When submitting, please indicate the category most relevant to your contribution. The program committee reserves the right to reassign accepted abstracts to a different category.

By contributing, participants can increase the visibility of their work, exchange insights with stakeholders from across the NFDI, and help identify opportunities for broader adoption and integration of services.

Digital Humanities-stage bij de Kiesraad

Gaat jouw hart sneller kloppen van de combinatie van historisch onderzoek en digitalisering? En wil je bijdragen aan transparante verkiezingen? De Kiesraad (Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koningsrelaties) zoekt een WO-student die wil meewerken aan de verdere ontwikkeling van de Databank verkiezingsuitslagen.

De Kiesraad ontwikkelt en beheert de Databank Verkiezingsuitslagen, waarmee verkiezingsuitslagen voor iedereen toegankelijk worden gemaakt. Tijdens deze stage ga je ontbrekende uitslagen uit het verleden verzamelen, digitaliseren en toevoegen aan de databank. Daarnaast onderzoek je hoe de databank gebruiksvriendelijker kan worden gemaakt en geef je hierover advies aan de Kiesraad.

De Kiesraad zoekt een WO-student in de laatste fase van de master, bij voorkeur met een achtergrond in Digital Humanities of Data Science. Het betreft een onderzoeksstage van 32 tot 40 uur per week in de tweede helft van 2026. De stagevergoeding bedraagt 800 euro per maand op basis van een 40-urige werkweek. Reageren kan tot en met 30 juni 2026.

Training Programme Autumn 2026 – New workshops and lectures

The Centre for Digital Humanities (CDH) is pleased to present its Autumn 2026 Training Programme. Join us this semester for a series of free workshops and lectures on digital methods, tools, and critical perspectives in the humanities.

We will kick off the Autumn semester on 17 September with a special online lecture by Julian Posada (Yale University) on Platform Extractivism – Data work and the people powering AI. Curated and hosted by Fabian Ferrari.

For anyone looking to create a good-looking thesis, article, or dissertation without spending hours on formatting, Xander Vertegaal returns with his Introduction to LaTeX workshop on 6 October.

We are also delighted to welcome back Hugo Schnack with Machine learning – principles and practices on 14 October. This workshop is now divided into two sessions that can be attended together or separately: an introductory session in the morning and a more in-depth session in the afternoon.

On 22 October, Lotje Siffels (Radboud University) will deliver an online lecture on the timely topic How the presence of Big Tech reshapes values in healthcare. This talk offers an excellent follow-up to this spring’s lecture on digital autonomy at Dutch universities.

Of course, our evergreen workshop Entry-level Python in four days is back on the menu. Hosted by the CDH Research Software Lab and starting on 18 November, it continues to be one of our most popular offerings.

We will conclude the programme on 20 November with a special workshop presented by the UU ArtLab: Capturing objects in 3D – Photogrammetry in heritage research. During this hands-on session, Sjors Nab and Sanne Frequin will guide participants through the process of transforming ordinary images into high-quality digital 3D representations of objects.

Starting in September 2026, they will join Annette Markham (Department of Media and Culture Studies) to form the new CDH Ambassador team.

CHINTEXDB-PERU28: A unique dataset of traditional textile iconographies from Chinchero, Peru for cultural preservation and image recognition

ABSTRACT

This dataset was collected during on-site fieldwork conducted in the district of Chinchero, located in the province of Urubamba, Cusco, Peru, a region internationally recognized for its rich Andean textile tradition rooted in Inca Culture heritage. The dataset comprises high-quality Photographic images of traditional handwoven Andean textile iconographies produced by local artisan communities. These images were captured directly at textile centers where the fabrics are woven, dyed and finished using ancestral techniques measuring authentic representation of colors, textures, and symbolic patterns under natural and controlled conditions. The dataset consists of 1358 images organized into 28 distinct classes, each corresponding to a specific textile iconography characteristic of the Chinchero tradition. The images are provided in a processed and curated format, facilitating organization enables systematic analysis of visual motifs that are often challenging to distinguish due to their intricate geometric patterns and cultural symbolism. The primary reuse potential of this dataset lies in its application to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) research focused on image classification, pattern recognition, and cultural heritage preservation. Researchers can leverage the dataset to develop and evaluate models capable of identifying and differentiating traditional Andean textile iconographies, addressing the growing difficulty faced by younger generations, local communities, and visitors in recognizing the cultural expressions. Additionally, the dataset supports interdisciplinary research in digital humanities, ethnography, textile studies, and cultural informatics contributing to the documentation and preservation of intangible cultural heritage. By making this dataset publicly available, this work aims to support the development of AI-driven tools for cultural preservation, educational applications, and heritage awareness, while fostering collaboration between researchers, technologists, and local artisan communities to safeguard ancestral knowledge for future generations.

The use of digital tools in Latin American and Latinx digital humanities is often about building connections beyond academic spaces and engaging with real problems faced by actual people.
