This year, Data School, the Data Management & Privacy team, ILS Labs, and several members of ArtLab are moving to Drift 10 in Utrecht, joining the Centre for Digital Humanities (CDH), of which they are part.

The process of bringing more CDH teams together at Drift 10 is steadily taking shape. In recent weeks, Data School and the Data Management & Privacy team have begun settling into their new offices. Data School is moving to room 2.01 at Drift 10, while the Data Management & Privacy team will be based in room 3.10. Several members of ArtLab will also have workspaces at Drift 10.

They join the Research Software Lab, Humanities IT, and most of the CDH core team, who are already located at Drift 10.

The ILS Labs are also in the process of relocating to Drift 10. Once their move from Janskerkhof 13 is completed, the basement, ground floor, and first floor of Drift 10 will house two biolabs, two eye-tracking labs, three phonetics/general-purpose labs, an interaction lab, and a head-turn-preference lab.

The CDH is delighted that this development will bring more of its units together under one roof. While collaboration between the teams is already well established, sharing the same location will create even more opportunities for informal exchange and knowledge sharing.

With these moves, a long-held dream of the CDH is becoming a reality: bringing together most of its teams in a single location.

The Research Software Lab and the Portal Development team welcome developer Evania Fasya to their team. With her background in psychology and human-computer interaction, she brings fresh perspectives to the CDH.

Fasya holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Information Systems and Human-Media Interaction at the University of Indonesia and University of Twente. Through these studies, she gained experience in creating computer systems that support organisations, as well as designing technology that improves interaction between people and digital systems.

Recently, she defended her PhD thesis at the University of Twente, in collaboration with Leiden University. Her research focused on the social effects of behaviors conveyed in social interaction between humans and virtual humans. This research provided experience in experimental research, including data analysis and journal publications.

What Fasya brings to the team

At the Centre for Digital Humanities, Fasya will work in both the Portal Development team and the Research Software Lab.

She can support you with:

• programming for information retrieval, virtual reality, software/web applications using Python or C#

Together with statistical advisor Kirsten Schutter, she can also assist with:

Gaat jouw hart sneller kloppen van de combinatie van historisch onderzoek en digitalisering? En wil je bijdragen aan transparante verkiezingen? De Kiesraad (Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koningsrelaties) zoekt een WO-student die wil meewerken aan de verdere ontwikkeling van de Databank verkiezingsuitslagen.

De Kiesraad ontwikkelt en beheert de Databank Verkiezingsuitslagen, waarmee verkiezingsuitslagen voor iedereen toegankelijk worden gemaakt. Tijdens deze stage ga je ontbrekende uitslagen uit het verleden verzamelen, digitaliseren en toevoegen aan de databank. Daarnaast onderzoek je hoe de databank gebruiksvriendelijker kan worden gemaakt en geef je hierover advies aan de Kiesraad.

De Kiesraad zoekt een WO-student in de laatste fase van de master, bij voorkeur met een achtergrond in Digital Humanities of Data Science. Het betreft een onderzoeksstage van 32 tot 40 uur per week in de tweede helft van 2026. De stagevergoeding bedraagt 800 euro per maand op basis van een 40-urige werkweek. The Centre for Digital Humanities (CDH) is pleased to present its Autumn 2026 Training Programme. Join us this semester for a series of free workshops and lectures on digital methods, tools, and critical perspectives in the humanities.

We will kick off the Autumn semester on 17 September with a special online lecture by Julian Posada (Yale University) on Platform Extractivism – Data work and the people powering AI. Curated and hosted by Fabian Ferrari.

For anyone looking to create a good-looking thesis, article, or dissertation without spending hours on formatting, Xander Vertegaal returns with his Introduction to LaTeX workshop on 6 October.

We are also delighted to welcome back Hugo Schnack with Machine learning – principles and practices on 14 October. This workshop is now divided into two sessions that can be attended together or separately: an introductory session in the morning and a more in-depth session in the afternoon.

On 22 October, Lotje Siffels (Radboud University) will deliver an online lecture on the timely topic How the presence of Big Tech reshapes values in healthcare. This talk offers an excellent follow-up to this spring’s lecture on digital autonomy at Dutch universities.

Of course, our evergreen workshop Entry-level Python in four days is back on the menu. Hosted by the CDH Research Software Lab and starting on 18 November, it continues to be one of our most popular offerings.

We will conclude the programme on 20 November with a special workshop presented by the UU ArtLab: Capturing objects in 3D – Photogrammetry in heritage research. During this hands-on session, Sjors Nab and Sanne Frequin will guide participants through the process of transforming ordinary images into high-quality digital 3D representations of objects.

We – Finn Pietrass and Thomas Rozendaal, student ambassadors at the Centre for Digital Humanities at Utrecht University – are organising a student colloquium: The Digital Humanities Dialogue for Students (date TBA). This event is designed to give students insight into how digital methods can be applied across different humanities disciplines, and to inspire students to explore these approaches themselves.

We are looking for 2 to 3 student speakers from the Faculties of Humanities who are interested in sharing their experiences with digital methods in their studies or a research project. Presentations will be short (approximately 15 minutes) and aimed at a broad student audience. No prior presentation experience is required.

Construction of the brand-new research facilities for the ILS Labs at Drift 10 is now in full swing. Renovations are progressing rapidly and the soundproof booths that will house the labs are currently being installed. The technical installation of the first labs is expected to start in April.

The labs of the Institute for Language Sciences (ILS) are used to study language development in babies and language processing and production in adults. Much of this research involves the use of sound stimuli, which makes soundproof laboratories essential.

Several parts of Drift 10 are currently being renovated and upgraded to accommodate the new facilities. The floors of both the ground floor and first floor are being fortified to support the booths and the ventilation system is being expanded. Once completed, the basement, ground floor, and first floor will house two biolabs, two eye-tracking labs, three phonetics/general-purpose labs, an interaction lab, and a head-turn-preference lab.

Although the move is only a short distance – from Janskerkhof 13 to Drift 10 – it is a major logistical project. To ensure that ongoing research can continue with minimal disruption, the labs will be relocated one at a time. Moving each lab will take several weeks, and the full relocation is expected to be completed by the end of 2026 or beginning of 2027.

Researchers from Utrecht University’s ArtLab are literally getting up close to art history. In the Grote Kerk in Alkmaar, they are using aerial work platforms to take thousands of photographs of the painted church vault.

Using advanced technology, the images will be combined into a detailed 3D model, allowing both researchers and visitors to explore the sixteenth-century artwork up close.

The role is part of the Canadian government’s Canada Impact+ Research Chairs program, a $1 billion initiative designed to attract leading researchers from around the world to address major societal challenges. Desde 2018, el grupo de investigación Lengua y Sociedad de la UNED ha organizado una serie de congresos internacionales bienales que se han consolidado como un foro de referencia para el debate académico sobre el bilingüismo y la educación bilingüe. A partir de ediciones previas centradas en el bilingüismo y la interculturalidad (2018), la relación entre bilingüismo y migración (2020), la interacción entre el bilingüismo, la educación bilingüe y sus contextos sociales  (2022), y la relación entre el bilingüismo, la educación bilingüe y las tensiones y conflictos políticos (2024), BiUNED 2026 se centra en el papel de las políticas lingüísticas pasadas, presentes y futuras en la configuración del bilingüismo y la educación bilingüe a escala global.

En las sociedades contemporáneas, el bilingüismo y el plurilingüismo ya no son fenómenos marginales. La movilidad global, los mercados laborales internacionalizados, la comunicación digital y el rápido desarrollo tecnológico, en particular la inteligencia artificial (IA) y las tecnologías basadas en datos, están transformando profundamente la manera en que las lenguas se aprenden, se usan, se regulan y se valoran. Estas transformaciones afectan no solo a las prácticas educativas, sino también a las metodologías de investigación, los modelos de evaluación y el diseño de las políticas lingüísticas. Al mismo tiempo, las políticas lingüísticas continúan generando tensiones vinculadas a ideologías, identidades, equidad, derechos lingüísticos y acceso a la educación, cuestiones que siguen ocupando un lugar central en las agendas políticas europeas e internacionales.

Los avances recientes de la Inteligencia Artificial y de las tecnologías del lenguaje están transformando las prácticas de investigación en las Humanidades y las Ciencias Sociales. Este contexto abre nuevas oportunidades, pero también plantea desafíos que invitan a repensar preguntas de investigación, metodologías y formas de colaboración interdisciplinar, situando la reflexión humanística en un lugar central en el desarrollo y uso responsable de estas tecnologías. La UNED cuenta con una amplia y diversa comunidad investigadora que trabaja en la intersección entre Humanidades Digitales, Procesamiento del Lenguaje Natural, Recuperación de Información y tecnologías afines. En este marco, la participación de la UNED en las infraestructuras europeas CLARIN y DARIAH, articulada a través de la red estratégica CLARIAH-ES, ha permitido consolidar un espacio común de encuentro, intercambio y colaboración entre disciplinas tradicionalmente separadas. El nodo CLARIAH-UNED nace con la vocación de: • Visibilizar la investigación que se desarrolla en la UNED en el ámbito de las Humanidades Digitales y las Tecnologías del Lenguaje.

• Fomentar redes de colaboración entre grupos, departamentos y centros, tanto dentro como fuera de la universidad.

El estudio de la prensa histórica constituye uno de los campos más fértiles y a la vez más complejos para la investigación interdisciplinar con metodologías digitales. La prensa es una fuente privilegiada para comprender los discursos, valores, gustos, redes intelectuales y dinámicas sociales de comunidades, con lo que apela a la investigación relacionada con la historia, literatura, traducción, geografía, economía, música o la sociología. Sin embargo, su investigación presenta varios retos metodológicos, como son el volumen de material, su dispersión, la necesidad de conocimiento contextual para comprender el contenido y la precaria preservación de muchas cabeceras.

En los últimos años, la digitalización de prensa histórica realizada por numerosas instituciones y proyectos ha ampliado de manera notable el acceso a estos materiales. Sin embargo, su exploración computacional aun presenta retos importantes. Gran parte de las colecciones no dispone de texto transcrito automáticamente mediante reconocimiento óptico de caracteres (OCR, por sus siglas en inglés), y las propias características de los periódicos y de las revistas (columnas, elementos gráficos, anuncios, fragmentación de noticias en varias páginas, serializaciones narrativas o tipografías deterioradas) dificultan los procesos de transcripción y de análisis automático. Aun así, el panorama europeo muestra avances significativos. Las infraestructuras de investigación europeas CLARIN y DARIAH están abordando estos retos a través de proyectos como NewsEye o iniciativas en Austria y Finlandia, que están mejorando de forma sustancial el tratamiento computacional de la prensa histórica.

No obstante, persiste un vacío notable en nuestro contexto: aunque CLARIN alberga varios corpus de prensa histórica en diversos idiomas europeos, todavía no cuenta con colecciones en español ni en otras lenguas oficiales de España. Con el ánimo de afrontar estos retos e intercambiar ideas sobre la investigación en prensa histórica desde las humanidades y desde las ciencias computacionales, tanto en español como en el resto de las lenguas del Estado, dos nodos de la red estratégica CLARIAH-ES que trabajan en proyectos de prensa histórica GRESEL-UNED (coordinado desde CLARIAH-UNED) y PressMint-ES (coordinado por HiTZ/CLARIAH-EUS), organizan este simposio en el que se propone explorar las siguientes líneas:

• Digitalización y exploración de fondos hemerográficos: OCR, segmentación de columnas, reconstrucción de seriales, metadatos.
• Procesamiento lingüístico y análisis semántico: extracción de entidades, análisis de tópicos, reconocimiento de autoría, análisis del discurso.
• Inteligencia artificial aplicada a corpus históricos: entrenamiento de modelos específicos para la prensa; detección automática de géneros, ironía o autoría, creación de RAGs para la exploración de prensa histórica.
• Proyectos de corpus multilingües y diversidad lingüística: estudios sobre prensa histórica en todas las lenguas del Estado español.
• Exploración geográfica y social: cartografías de circulación, estudios de redes periodísticas, geografías culturales.

El próximo 2 de diciembre, en el Salón de Grados de Filosofía de la UNED tendrá lugar la II edición del seminario organizado por la UNED y por la Universidad de Sevilla, «La mirada del pasado», sobre estudios medievales y humanidades digitales.

Dentro de la actividad del propio seminario, del que se adjunta el programa, tendrá lugar la inauguración de la exposición Alfonso X e Galicia.

Del 3 al 16 de noviembre se celebrarán en Madrid diferentes actividades de iniciación a la investigación para que el público general y, muy especiamente los y las estudiantes de secundaria y bachillerato, conozcan de cerca a qué nos dedicamos las personas que hemos emprendido una carrera investigadora. Con esta ocasión, entre las muchas actividades que van a realizarse, hay dos relacionadas con las Humanidades Digitales:

Humanidades en transformación: del códice a la nube. 

Es una iniciativa del Grupo de Investigación en Humanidades Digitales que presentará varios de sus proyectos el día 14 de noviembre de 19 a 21h en la sede de Escuelas Pías. Más información: enlace 

Re-Write: una app móvil para la producción escrita de géneros textuales en inglés

Es un taller en el que se enseñará a utilizar la aplicación para móvil Re-write, que permite mejorar la redacción en inglés. El 3 de noviembre, de 10 a 11, online. Más información: enlace

El próximo 21 de noviembre, tendrá lugar un seminario organizado por el Máster en Ciencia del Lenguaje y Lingüística Hispánica y el LINHD, titulado «Historia fonética de la lectura poética: la fonética instrumental para el análisis de las grabaciones de poesía». En el seminario, la profesora Valentina Colonna de la Universidad de Granada, presentará su archivo de recitado de poemas y explicará los usos e implicaciones para el análisis de la fonética y de la poesía. La entrada La voz que lee la poesía: un seminario sobre literatura y fonética se publicó primero en LINHD.

El grupo de investigación ATLAS, en colaboración con la sede de la UNED en Úbeda, organizan el congreso TISLID’26 (Technological Innovation for Specialized Linguistic Domains).

Se ha lanzado ya la convocatoria (Aquí) que invita a investigadores, docentes y profesionales de la educación lingüística, la traducción y la tecnología educativa a enviar propuestas de comunicaciones, pósteres, talleres y simposios.

Entre los temas destacados de esta edición se incluyen:

• Inteligencia artificial generativa y competencias adaptativas

• Aprendizaje y enseñanza de lenguas mediado por tecnología

• Accesibilidad y diseño inclusivo en la educación lingüística

• Traducción especializada y tecnologías del lenguaje

• Evaluación y retroalimentación automatizadas

El próximo 28 de octubre, el grupo de innovación docente de la Facultad de Filología IDEAAL, celebrará un seminario titulado «La inteligencia artificial como herramienta para la enseñanza y la investigación» que se emitirá en directo por Canal UNED. En este contexto, Cristina Aranda, exacadémica y empresaria, ofrecerá la conferencia «MÁS ALLÁ DEL ALGORITMO: HUMANIZANDO LA IA», que irá seguida de una mesa redonda en la que se hablará de los retos y las oportunidades que se presentan para la Filología en la era de la inteligencia artificial.
