DHNB Board Elections – Call for Nominations 2026

2026年1月21日 19:52

January 2026 · News

In accordance with the statutes of the Digital Humanities in the Nordic and Baltic Countries (DHNB) association, elections to the DHNB Board will be conducted by remote electronic vote in the period 16 February – 1 March 2026.

The Nomination Committee hereby invites nominations for board membership. Any member of the association may be nominated for election to the Board. In this election cycle, three of the nine board seats are up for election, each for a three-year term. All the three board members whose terms are ending are eligible to be re-elected and have conveyed that they intend to reapply. However, the election is open, and any member of the association may be nominated for election to the board. Thus, the Nomination Committee hereby invites any and all nominations for board membership.

Each nomination must be accompanied by:

  • a short statement from the nominee confirming their willingness to serve, and
  • the support of two DHNB members other than the nominee.

Nominations must reach the Nomination Committee no later than 15 February 2026.

The DHNB Board works to advance digital humanities across the Nordic and Baltic regions through monthly meetings and the allocation of specific responsibilities among board members. While the workload is manageable, board service presupposes an active engagement in supporting the association’s activities, networks, and strategic development.

DHNB is committed to openness and inclusivity and welcomes nominations reflecting the geographical, disciplinary, and institutional diversity of the Nordic and Baltic digital humanities community.

Questions regarding the nomination or election process may be directed to board@dhnb.eu.
Nominations, including a short bio and motivation from the nominee, should likewise be sent to this address.

With best regards,
On behalf of the Nomination Committee

Anda Baklāne & Katrine Baunvig

Call for Papers – DHNB 2026, Aarhus

Lost in Abundance: Encounters with the Non-Canonical

Conference main webpage: https://dhnb.eu/conferences/dhnb2026/

The Digital Humanities in the Nordic and Baltic Countries (DHNB) 2026 invites scholars to explore the richness of digital materials that exist beyond the obvious and the well-explored. Under the theme ‘Lost in Abundance’, we particularly welcome contributions that engage with the extensive yet frequently unnoticed wealth of marginalized texts, visuals, and diverse cultural artefacts – whether hidden within familiar archives, waiting unnoticed within vast datasets, or scattered and barely accessible across fragmented collections. However, submissions on any aspect of digital humanities scholarship will also be considered.

The contemporary scholarly landscape has been fundamentally reshaped by vast digitization efforts undertaken by libraries, museums, archives, and other cultural heritage institutions (GLAM). Combined with rapidly expanding collections of born-digital content and extensive online repositories, these digitized sources offer rich opportunities for historical and cultural inquiry. However, they also present significant methodological and interpretive challenges. How can digital humanities scholars effectively navigate and analyze this abundance, particularly when historical contexts are complex, fragmented, or elusive? And how can digital humanities help reveal biases and gaps inherent in the formation and digitization of GLAM collections?

We encourage fresh and critical approaches to uncovering overlooked literary trends, forgotten visual drifts, unconventional historical records or cultural products etc. How might digital humanities guide us through this abundant yet underexplored landscape? What insights, challenges, and questions emerge when we re-direct our attention from canonical towards underexplored, neglected, or scattered data?

Possible topics include, but are in no way limited to:

  • Identifying hidden texts, images, genres, and multimedia within established or emerging archives
  • Methodological innovations for engaging with neglected or dispersed digital content
  • Critically revisiting and challenging established categories and cultural frameworks
  • Ethical reflections on exploring overlooked or fragmented sources
  • Interdisciplinary insights into underexplored and diverse cultural materials
  • Advanced and inventive use of digital methods and computational approaches

Developmental Track for Works-in-Progress

In addition to our traditional conference formats, DHNB 2026 pilots a developmental track specifically for works-in-progress. This track is designed for scholars who wish to present ongoing projects and receive constructive input to help shape the next stages of their work. Each presentation in this track follows a 30-minute slot, consisting of up to 15 minutes for the presenter’s introduction to the topic and the aspects on which feedback is particularly sought, followed by up to 15 minutes of discussion (during which the presenter may also show additional material as needed). Sessions will be organized in smaller groups to foster in-depth, collegial, and supportive dialogue, while remaining compatible with the broader conference schedule. Submissions to the Works-in-Progress track are accepted as abstracts of 500-1000 words. When submitting to this track, authors should already in their submission clearly outline the aspects on which feedback is particularly sought.

Doctoral Consortium

DHNB 2026 renews the Doctoral Consortium track debuted at DHNB 2025 with the idea that doctoral students could present their ongoing studies and get mentored by more experienced scholars. This consortium will take place during the pre-conference events. To encourage young researchers to participate in the conference, DHNB will provide up to six bursaries to cover reasonable travel and accommodation costs (up to 500€) for participating in this event. You can apply for the bursary at the same time as submitting your proposal. Please spread the word among your colleagues, friends, and students!
Submissions to the Doctoral Consortium track are accepted as abstracts of 500-1000 words.

Workshops and Tutorials

Workshops can take many forms, from community hacking sessions to thematically focused mini conferences attached to the main one, whose presentations are either pre-selected or sourced through separate calls for proposals solicited by the workshop coordinators. Tutorials on the other hand present tools, technologies, or practical exercises of interest to DH researchers. Workshops and tutorials may be proposed as either half-day (up to four hours) or full-day (up to eight hours) events. Submissions should be 1000-2000 words in length and include an introduction of the topic/idea of the workshop/tutorial and its importance, information on the intended target audience, as well as details about the expected outcome(s). Proposals for workshops and tutorials are evaluated in an expedited fashion by the Programme Committee to ensure their organizers have enough time themselves for e.g. separate workshop calls for papers.

General Track

This traditional conference track accepts proposals for long papers, short papers, posters, and demos, as well as panels. Between the proposal categories, the following conceptual divisions apply:

-Long papers:

  • Are expected to present mature research with a clear research question, theoretical framing, methodology, results, and discussion.
  • Will be presented for 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes for Q&A
  • Can be submitted as either abstracts of 1000-1500 words excluding references or as full text papers of 8-16 pages excluding references

-Short papers:

  • May present preliminary results or innovative methods, but should still outline the research question, materials, and methodology in sufficient detail to allow evaluation.
  • Will be presented for 15 minutes, followed by 5 minutes for Q&A
  • Can be submitted as either abstracts of 500-1000 words excluding references or as full text papers of 4-8 pages excluding references

-Posters and demos:

  • Posters can either present small self-contained works, work-in-progress or be general project descriptions. Demos are interactive demonstrations of tools, services or techniques.
  • Will be presented in the conference poster session, prefixed by 1-minute lightning talks
  • Can be submitted as either abstracts of 250-500 words excluding references or as full text papers of 2-4 pages excluding references

-Panels are free-form proposals for pre-built, thematically coherent 60–120-minute slots within the general conference programme (typically consisting e.g. of multiple individual contributions and joint discussion).

All submissions to general track should be explicit in their scholarly contribution, regardless of the format and maturity of the research. Submitted proposals will undergo a single-blind peer-review process whereby the reviewers know the names/affiliations of the abstract authors and co-authors. Based on the reviews, authors may be asked to also make revisions before publication.

All submissions – whether full-text proceeding or abstracts – must be formatted according to the DHNB PUB template. Full-text proceedings will be published in a citable conference proceedings collection (https://journals.uio.no/dhnbpub/) before the conference; abstracts will be gathered into a book of abstracts. After the conference, a separate call for post-proceedings will be issued, with its own deadlines for submissions, reviews and revisions, aimed primarily at publishing research that went into the conference as abstracts.

Join us in Aarhus to explore and illuminate the abundance of digital materials awaiting discovery!

Submission Deadline: October 29, 2025
Conference Dates: March 9–13, 2026
Location: Aarhus, Denmark

Contact: dhnb2026@cas.au.dk

How to submit: All proposals must be submitted in English via the ConfTool conference management system by 29 October 2025. Link: https://www.conftool.org/dhnb2026/ (Please note: You need to create a new user, even if you have previously had a ConfTool account)

We look forward to your innovative contributions and lively discussions in Aarhus.

DHNB board elections – call for candidates

2025年2月3日 23:21
The elections for the DHNB board will take place between 16 February – 1 March. Our aim is to keep the DHNB community open and inclusive, and to support this goal, we are now inviting candidates to stand in the board elections.
Altogether four of the nine positions on the board are open to be filled for 3-year terms. In addition, due to e.g. board term limits, at least three of these need to be filled with new members from outside the current board.
We thus hope to find board members from different countries and branches of DH, with a common passion for advancing digital humanities in the Nordics and Baltics. The board work is based on monthly meetings and some responsibilities assigned to each board member – these are not super time consuming but we hope you would be prepared to take some of them to effectively promote our goals.
If you have questions, let us know at board (at) dhnb.eu, or, if would like to stand as a candidate, please send us a short bio and motivation!
Best regards,
On behalf of the election committee,
Veronika Laippala

Students, researchers, and GLAM professionals are welcome to enroll in the Sixth Baltic Summer School of Digital Humanities:  Large Language Models and Small Languages, which will be held on 22-26 July 2024 at the National Library of Latvia (NLL) in Riga and online.

Register here: https://www.digitalhumanities.lv/bssdh/2024/registration/

This year, participants will have the opportunity to learn text processing and data visualization using the Python programming language, led by researchers from the National Library of Latvia and faculty from the University of Latvia and Riga Technical University, Uldis Bojārs and Valdis Saulespurēns. The curriculum will spotlight the capabilities and research applications of large language models. Andres Karjus, a researcher specializing in computer linguistics and cultural analytics at the University of Tallinn’s CUDAN Open Lab, will showcase the efficiency and speed with which these sophisticated language models can conduct text annotation and analysis, surpassing the output of earlier technological generations. Līva Rotkale, a philosopher and docent at the University of Latvia, will share her insights on formulating effective inquiries for the ChatGPT language model, focused on the needs of humanities researchers and students.

We will also discuss how the development of natural language processing tools and large language models is progressing for smaller languages. Presentations will be made by Javier de la Rosa, a researcher from the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory of the National Library of Norway, who will talk about the development of a large language model for the Norwegian language, as well as by researchers of the Latgalian language Sanita Martena, Ilga Šuplinska, and Antra Kļaviņa, who will introduce the digital resources for the Latgalian language. A separate session will be dedicated to text morphological and syntactic annotation tools, which are particularly important when working with morphologically rich languages (session led by Normunds Grūzītis, a lead researcher at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Latvia).

Focusing on the use of artificial intelligence in image processing, the special guest for BSSDH 2024 will be the researcher and artist Mar Canet Solà, who will demonstrate the Collection Space Navigator – a tool that provides the ability to examine multidimensional image data from various perspectives. This topic could be of particular interest to specialists from memory institutions who oversee the creation and research of digital image collections.

The school is organised as a hybrid event on-site and remotely. The fee for completing the full course is EUR 40 for both on-site and online participants; keynote lectures will be accessible for free and streamed on the NLL’s Facebook and YouTube channels.

The working language is English.

DHNB Call for Conference Hosts 2025

2022年12月8日 16:53

DHNB – CALL FOR HOSTS

The Digital Humanities in the Nordic and Baltic Countries (DHNB) Board invites proposals to host the 2025 DHNB Conference.

The DHNB conference has become a fixed annual event in the DH calendar. After successful events in OsloGothenburg, Helsinki, Copenhagen, virtually in Riga, and hybrid in Uppsala, our next DHNB conference will be online from 8–10 March 2023. It is jointly organized by the University of Oslo, the University of Bergen, and the University of Stavanger. The 2024 conference will be held on-site in Reykjavík, Iceland.

As a conference host, you can highlight exciting DH initiatives and research. The proposed time for the 9th annual DHNB conference is the first half of March 2025. We encourage proposals from Nordic and Baltic countries, particularly Lithuania and Estonia. The conference duration is 2.5 days, with additional days for pre-conference workshops.

Hosting Criteria for an on-site DHNB2025 Conference

The call is for an in-person event, but proposers are encouraged to suggest a format that would include a virtual component, e.g. live streaming of the sessions, a hybrid conference, etc.

The main criteria for proposing a location/institution to host the conference are:

  1. A suitable and accessible location, including a venue with a lecture hall big enough to seat all conference participants for keynote talks and the Annual General Meeting (AGM), as well as meeting spaces and smaller rooms for individual sessions and workshops. As a rough guide for the in-person events: there were approximately 200 participants and 3–5 parallel sessions at the 2016 and 2017 conferences in Oslo and Gothenburg, whereas Helsinki 2018 and Copenhagen 2019 had around 300 participants. Other essential requirements include high-speed Internet access, AV equipment, adequate catering facilities and various accommodation options for conference delegates. We recommend having a venue which will be suitable for parallel sessions.
  2. Possible sources of funding to cover the organization costs: costs will typically include renting the conference venue, salary for part-time conference organizer and administration of registration. If possible, keep costs down by using conference facilities at a university campus.
  3. Sufficient human resources to form an organizing committee and run the conference: we recommend a program committee with approximately ten members and a separate local organizing committee of 5–10 persons. Based on the experience from previous conferences, one should allocate a minimum of 4 person-months for the practical organization of the conference and some volunteers during the event.

The resources described above are typical for any conference.

In addition to the above, we will take the following into account in the selection process (in unprioritized order):
1) air and rail transport connections,
2) cost for delegates (travel, accommodation, fees, etc.),
3) reliability of partner institutions,
4) outreach opportunities for DHNB.

DHNB has no central funds available for organizing the conference. The DHNB Board and the current conference organizing committee will advise on matters related to the organization of the conference. A conference handbook will be available for 2025 organisers. The Local Organizers Committee and the Program Committee, which the Board will appoint in collaboration with local organizers, will decide on the conference theme and program.

Format & Deadline for Proposals

Proposals should include a rough budget and potential funding sources, a description of the venue, and notes regarding the human resources available.

Please send proposals and inquiries to the Chair of DHNB, Annika Rockenberger, annika.rockenberger@ub.uio.no

Deadline for expression of interest: January 15, 2023. Deadline for final proposals: January 30, 2023.

DHNB BOARD: CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

2022年11月24日 22:58

The Nomination Committee of DHNB opens the call for nominations for three positions for the next election period, which starts in April 2023. Board members are elected for three years (20232026).

The term of three of the current Board members, Olga Holownia (Iceland), Lars Kjær (Denmark) and Costanza Navarretta (Denmark), runs out. Olga Holownia is not a candidate for re-election. The complete list of Board members can be found on the website: http://dig-hum-nord.eu/about-dhn/board-members.

More information about the DHNB Board can be found in the statutes.

Every member of the DHNB association* has the right to nominate a candidate for a position on the Board. Every member of the association may be nominated for election to the Board provided that

  • the nominee confirms their willingness to serve in writing and is supported by two members of the association other than the nominee;
  • the nomination reaches the Nomination Committee by midnight (CET time zone) on February 15, 2023.

The Nomination Committee will consider all valid nominations, keeping in mind the purpose of the association and the need for Officers, as well as 1) overall geographical representation of members, 2) continuity versus turnover, and 3) diversity (DHNB Statutes §7.2). Given the current composition of the Board, we would encourage proposals from the countries that are not represented on the Board, i.e. Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden. To ensure the effective functioning of the Board, we particularly encourage applications from candidates who are committed to taking an active role on the Board.

Nominations should be sent to the Nomination Committee, Sanita Reinsone sanita.reinsone[at]lulfmi.lv and Ditte Larsen dila[at]kb.dk by February 15, 2023.

Questions about the election process may be addressed to the Nomination Committee.

Questions about the responsibilities of the Board may be addressed to the chair of the Board, Annika Rockenberger annika.rockenberger[at]ub.uio.no.

* Only members in good standing (this means that the fee for 2022 is paid) are eligible and have voting rights. To renew your membership, please follow the instructions on the DHNB website http://dig-hum-nord.eu/about-dhn/join-dhn.
