Universität Heidelberg: Research Data Engineer 100% E13 (w/m/d)

The Heidelberg Center for Digital Humanities is one of Germany′s leading institutions in the fields of digital and computational humanities. Its key areas of focus are digital linguistics, digital heritage, and AI/machine learning. Thanks to its close ties with the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR), the HCDH pursues the computational humanities with particular intensity.

The Research Data Engineer full-time position (E13, 100%) for a term of 4 years, with the option to extend is available at the Heidelberg Center for Digital Humanities (HCDH) starting December 1, 2026 (or earliest possible).

Your responsibilities:

  • Bridging the gap between cultural heritage data and advanced computational research: Design and build data storage layers and data processing pipelines that enable our humanities researchers to create and analyze massive, heterogeneous datasets (including legacy data)—ranging from historical texts and archives to multimedia, 3D and spatial data
  • Research Collaboration: Act as the technical consultant for humanities scholars, translating complex research questions into viable computational and database requirements
  • Data Pipelines: Design, implement, and maintain scalable pipelines to ingest, clean, and harmonize diverse cultural heritage and other data and create interoperable datasets for research
  • Data architecture: Design, implement, and maintain data structures and connect to existing data storage layers and infrastructure
  • Semantic Web & Knowledge Graphs: Develop and optimize graph databases, ontologies, and semantic models (e.g., using RDF, OWL, CIDOC-CRM) to interconnect complex historical and cultural data
  • Tool Development & Automation: Build custom APIs, and scripts (primarily in Python) to automate data ingestion, text-mining, and natural language processing (NLP) workflows
  • FAIR and FAIR4RS principles: Collaborate with the Research Data Unit and Scientific Software Center and its Data Science Unit at the IWR, and the University Computing Centre (HPC and storage infrastructure)

Your profile:

  • Education & Background: Preferably a PhD, but MA/MSc are encouraged to apply
  • Soft Skills: Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate across interdisciplinary teams of software engineers and traditional humanities scholars
  • Core Tech Stack: Excellent knowledge of Python (plus libraries like Open3D, Pandas, SpaCy, or NLTK) and version control using Git, experience with Rust and/or PyTorch is a plus
  • Database & Semantic Web Skills: Strong experience with databases (e.g., Neo4j, GraphDB, NoSQL, SQL) and semantic web technologies (e.g., SPARQL, JSON-LD)
  • DH Standards: Ideally knowledge of text encoding standards (e.g., TEI-XML) and metadata schemas (e.g., Dublin Core, MODS, LIDO); desirable: Experience with working with humanities’ data
  • Independent and structured work style, ability to work in teams and to fixed timelines
  • Language requirements: Very good English language skills, desirable: basic German skills

The position is a 4-year fixed-term position with the possibility of extension. Remuneration is based on the TV-L collective agreement (pay group 13). The position is suitable for job-sharing.

A Conversation with Sarah Bryant & David Allen (2.4)

Description

In this episode, Sara Whitver talks to book artist Sarah Bryant and ecologist and biology professor David Allen about their collaborative work over the years. Specifically, we will talk about their latest project, Acts of Translation, a five part collaborative project coordinated and designed by Bryant that addresses the communication and conversion of information across disciplines. Sarah Bryant is an internationally recognized letterpress book artist whose creation process uses multiple modes of digital creation and documentation in order to produce her final analog piece of art, a letterpress printed book. David Allen is associate professor of biology at Middlebury College, where his research focuses on forest ecology. They have collaborated multiple times to produce data-driven art.

A Conversation with Amanda Koh

Description

During this ADHC Talk, Sara Whitver will talk with our guest, Dr. Amanda Koh. Amanda runs the Koh Laboratory which “focuses on engineering soft materials and material interfaces to enable new stretchable electronics, soft robotics, smart devices, and porous materials.” One of Amanda’s current projects is to design a wearable device that helps singers measure their breath while singing, with the ultimate hope of making this device more widely available for breathing therapies. Amanda and Sara will talk about what it means to design and create wearable devices and what kinds of ways these wearable devices can change our perception of what it means to be human and understand our bodies relative to the world around us.

Call for Proposals to Host DHA2023

Expressions of Interest are now open to host the 2023 Digital Humanities Australasia (DHA) Conference in Australia or New Zealand.

The Executive Committee of the Australasian Association for Digital Humanities (aaDH) invites proposals to host the Digital Humanities Australasia (DHA) Conference in Australia or New Zealand in 2023. DHA is the major conference of the aaDH, which was formed in March 2011. 

Prior DHA Conferences have been 2-4 days in duration. The host organisation is welcome to design the conference program and scope in a way best suited to their local context.

There are normally parallel sessions, a small number of plenary presentations, workshops, tutorials, posters and a postgraduate support event. A meeting of the aaDH committee will occur during the conference, and lunchtime slots are normally used for meetings of associated working groups or sub-committees.

The aaDH Executive Committee provides guidance and assistance to the host institution and can advise on aspects relating to the conference website, facilities, book of abstracts, and any social events the local host thinks would be appropriate.  

The conference is self-financed through conference fees and any other financial contributions that the local organiser is able to arrange. aaDH expects no payment from the local host in the event that the conference makes a profit, but no financial support is provided for the conference by aaDH, except in relation to possible awards, such as named prizes and a bursaries for postgraduate students. 

The local organiser is expected to set (and verify) three levels of fees: members of aaDH, non-members, and students (negotiable). 

There should be a clear process for peer-reviewing paper, poster and panel proposals.

Proposals should include:

  • Proposed dates (it is anticipated the conference will be between August – October 2023, however, there is some flexibility)
  • Overview of facilities at the host institution
  • Overview of local institutional engagement and support which the host institution expects to be available
  • Sponsorship
  • Indicative local organising committee
  • AV/Computer, Internet access/wireless facilities
  • Social events, including the conference banquet 
  • Options for accommodation (with provisional costs) 
  • Travel information and advice 
  • A provisional budget, with a provisional registration fee 
  • Options for payment (credit card, foreign currency etc) by participants

Shortlisted hosts will be invited to meet with the aaDH Executive Committee to discuss their proposal. Budgets and other information from previous conferences, where available, can be made available on request, for planning purposes.
