Whether you’re new to AI coding assistants or have been using them for a while, you can join this workshop to explore the wide range of these tools available, discuss best practices for using them in your projects, and discover when and how to use them to maximize your productivity. You will not need any more than a basic understanding of programming. Plus, if you’re already comfortable with AI tools, this is a great opportunity to share your experiences and insights with others!

This fall, KU Leuven ICTS is offering a selection of online workshops focused on various softwares for working with data. If you have been hoping to learn more about Excel for use with quantitative data, LaTeX for more flexibility when it comes to the format of your academic writing, or Python for more advanced data science techniques (workshop requires knowledge of a previous programming language such as R), then you might be interested in one of the following workshops!

Excel – Basics module 1 (online)

• What? By means of practical examples you will quickly become familiar with the basic techniques of Excel: Input, Editing, Formatting, Simple calculations.
• For whom? Anyone who is interested, regardless of their statute (PhD student, postdoc, scientific collaborator..). No prior knowledge of Excel required, but some experience with other Office programmes (Word, Outlook) comes in handy.

Python as a second language (online)

• What? This training session introduces the programming language to participants who have programming experience with other programming languages such as R, MATLAB, C/C++ or Fortran.

In this workshop, Pim van Bree and Geert Kessels, the developers at Lab1100, will introduce us to Nodegoat, a web-based data managment, network analysis, and visualization environment. This workshop is for KU Leuven researchers who are interested in using this relational database platform in their research projects or who are already working with this platform and would like to troubleshoot issues or learn how to get the most from Nodegoat.

Sources here; sources there; sources everywhere! Do you need help finding a better system to organize your reference materials for your Phd project? You are in luck! The Artes Research team in collaboration with research support from the Faculty of Law will offer a workshop to help PhD researchers get started with the reference management software Zotero.

What can you expect?

The session will start with an introduction to the basic functionalities of Zotero including the various ways to add references to your Zotero library, how to incorporate citations into your Microsoft Word documents using the Zotero plug-in, setting up a tagging system, annotating references in Zotero, and generating bibliographies. Following this introduction, the hands-on session will take place in small groups. During this portion of the workshop, participants will try out all the basics while a group leader is available to help with issues or answer questions. Finally, the workshop will close with a Q&A session and the opportunity to learn about more advanced features of the software that could be particularly helpful for PhD researchers.

Required preparations:

• Create a Zotero account (free)
• Download the *Zotero desktop app
  • Open Microsoft word to check if the Zotero plug-in has been installed correctly; this should happen automatically; you will find it in the menu bar
• Install the Zotero web browser connector (available for Chrome, Safari, and Firefox browsers)
• Join the Artes Digital Scholarship Community on Zotero
• Prepare a list of 10 sources you use (or will use) in your research (PDFs, an article open in an academic database like JSTOR, an existing bibliography, …); these will be used during the hands-on portion of the workshop

*Legal researchers who prefer to use Juris-M, can install the Juris-M desktop app and connector instead of the regular Zotero app. Juris-M is a branch of Zotero that works better with legal sources, but is otherwise identical to Zotero (version 5) and will also allow you to use a Zotero account and join the Artes Digital Scholarship Community.

DHSITE 2021 is taking place the weeks of May 17-21 and May 24-28. In this two-week period, they organize 18-hour micro-course workshops. Workshop topics include an Introduction to Python (in English and in French), Issues in Digital Humanities, Introduction to Linked Open Data, Text Analysis, and Machine Translation. This hybrid round-table and workshop is co-organized between LECTIO, KU Leuven, and the University of Utrecht. Event dates: 11-12 May. Registration deadline: 30 April 2021.
