Valuable Lives: Black Unfreedom and the Collapse of Slavery in Jamaica is our newest major project aimed at creating the first and most comprehensive publicly available database on black lives under British slavery. Our main source is the Register of Returns of enslaved people published triennially from 1817-1832. In the study of British slavery, no other data set is more textured, systematic, and detailed in documenting black lives. We will harness modern database technology, computational approaches, and innovative historiographical methods to digitize the records and produce new findings on enslaved lives that will have disciplinary, and especially public, relevance in both Britain and the Caribbean.

The Centre for Digital Humanities (CDH) invites permanent academic staff of the Faculty of Humanities at Utrecht University to apply for the position of CDH affiliate. Affiliates act as ambassadors and liaisons within their departments, supporting the ambitions of the CDH. Currently, we have three openings in the departments History and Art History, Philosophy and Religious Studies, and Languages, Literature and Communication.

About the role

As CDH affiliate, you will help strengthen the connection between your department and digital humanities. You will do this by:

• identifying training and educational needs within your department;
• contributing to the development and integration of computational components in BA and MA programmes;
• advising colleagues on funding applications that include a digital humanities component;
• fostering collaboration between researchers and IT specialists;
• contributing to community-building activities.

In addition to these core tasks, each affiliate will pursue an individual project as part of the position.

Affiliates meet periodically with the CDH programme team to strengthen collaboration and exchange.

Position details

• The position is open to all permanent academic staff;
• Appointment is for a maximum term of 3 years;
• The workload is 0.1 fte, funded by the CDH and deducted from teaching duties;
• Affiliates have access to the CDH infrastructure, a proportionate budget, and support staff for organizing activities.

New candidates will be appointed by April 2026 and will start in the 2026-2027 academic year.

Humanities researchers, lecturers, and students are increasingly working with digital methods, to study culture, language, media, and history. Skills such as data analysis, visualisation, and digital archiving open up new research possibilities — and are valuable additions to your thesis and CV.

Through the CDH training programme, students can learn to code, work with social media data and AI, and other digital tools — alongside lecturers and researchers. There is also a special grant available specifically for students.

Voor dit lab zijn we op zoek naar een:

Wat ga je doen?

• Je onderhoudt en documenteert labhardware en –opstellingen.
• Je beantwoordt vragen van gebruikers en helpt onderzoekers technische problemen op te lossen.

The research training group “Literature and the Public Sphere in Differentiated Contemporary Cultures” at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität (FAU) Erlangen-Nürnberg, funded by the German Research Foundation, is offering 11 Doctoral Positions (m/f/d) (65%, E-13 TV-L) for a duration of three years respectively, starting 1 October 2025. Extensions for the doctoral positions (6 months) are possible.

The interdisciplinary Research Training Group (RTG) aims to analyze contemporary literatures since 1945 in different public and cultural contexts. It examines the conditions that enable and influence different literatures in the public sphere, thereby focusing on their cultural specificities, potentials and functions. It uses a broad concept of literature, including the digitalization of society and its consequences, socio-cultural political and economic contexts, (inter-)mediality and media competition, institutional conditions, the literary industry and literary life as objects of enquiry.

The RTG considers literatures from different cultural and language areas, including ‘small literatures’ and minority cultures on different continents. Accordingly, the RTG investigates the interactions between literatures and public spheres in a differentiated manner. Adopting a comparative and transnational perspective, the RTG takes into account digital, praxeological, cultural studies and philological methods and supports research projects from social, media, material, ethical or economic studies.

Functie

Het Data School team van de Universiteit Utrecht zoekt een student-assistent digitale ethiek. Data School hoort bij het Centre for Digital Humanities en werkt samen met overheidsorganisaties om data ethiek te waarborgen binnen werkpraktijken. Onze tools zoals De Ethische Data Assistent (DEDA) en het Impact Assessment Mensenrechten en Algoritmes (IAMA) worden geïntroduceerd in (overheids)organisaties door middel van workshops, lezingen of trajectbegeleiding. Tijdens deze sessies worden niet alleen ethische knelpunten geïdentificeerd en het beraadslagingsproces gedocumenteerd, maar ook inzicht opgedaan over hoe dataficatie zich uitspeelt in overheidsorganisaties. Deze input wordt gebruikt om onze instrumenten te verbeteren, en wordt tevens vertaald naar academische output over de impact van digitalisering op het openbaar bestuur.

Als student-assistent digitale ethiek in het openbaar bestuur zul je lid worden van het data ethiek team van Data School. Dit is een jong en dynamisch team, gesitueerd in het hart van Utrecht.

Taakomschrijving

• Bijdragen aan het extern begeleiden van sessies met het IAMA;
• Helpen met het organiseren en geven van cursusdagen, workshops en lezingen;
• Bijdragen aan de doorontwikkeling van tools zoals DEDA en het IAMA.

Als onze nieuwe student-assistent beschik je over de volgende competenties:

• Je bent student aan een universiteit in Nederland, en zult dat nog minstens 6 maanden zijn.
• Je hebt ervaring in een relevante discipline zoals filosofie, media- en cultuurwetenschappen, bestuurskunde, kunstmatige intelligentie, of een anderszins gerelateerde achtergrond of werkervaring.
• Je hebt interesse in datapraktijken, met name hoe datapraktijken zich manifesteren binnen openbaar bestuur. Naast het onderzoeken hiervan, is een wil om het openbaar bestuur te helpen om datapraktijken meer ethisch verantwoord te maken ook belangrijk.
• Je bent in staat goed samen te werken.
• Je hebt goede communicatievaardigheden. Aangezien er in deze functie nauw samengewerkt wordt – zowel intern als extern – is dit essentieel. Ondanks dit samenwerken is zelfstandigheid echter ook een groot goed: proactief zijn en initiatief nemen wordt gewaardeerd. Hierin komt het belang van communicatievaardigheden ook weer naar boven: er wordt belang gehecht aan het vragen om hulp of opheldering wanneer nodig.
• Je bent taalvaardig in het Nederlands.

Data School, Universiteit Utrecht

Data School bestaat uit een jong, dynamisch en interdisciplinair team en bevindt zich in het hart van Utrecht (Drift 13). Iedereen in ons team heeft een andere achtergrond en er is ruimte om je eigen expertise en ideeën in te brengen. Door bij ons te werken krijg je inzicht in hoe organisaties omgaan met digitalisering en dataficatie.

Wij hebben twee onderzoekslijnen:

1. Publieke debatten online. Voorbeelden van onderzoeken in het verleden op deze onderzoekslijn is Spelen met vuur, over hoe de wisselwerking tussen de Tweede Kamer en sociale media woede in het publieke debat aanwakkert.

Het publieke debat vindt in toenemende mate online plaats: op platformen die bekend zijn bij het grote publiek zoals Facebook en X, maar ook op niche-platformen waar een kleiner deel van de bevolking gebruik maakt, zoals Telegram en Reddit. De gebruikers van deze platformen vormen geen grote, grijze massa, maar bestaan uit deelpublieken die elk hun eigen taal, interesses en gebruiken hebben. Om grip te krijgen op hoe mensen online over bepaalde onderwerpen praten, is het relevant om deze deelpublieken in kaart te brengen. Hoe wordt er binnen elk deelpubliek gesproken over bepaalde onderwerpen, zoals datacenters, corona, duurzaamheid enz.? Zijn deze deelpublieken geïsoleerd of juist erg verbonden met elkaar? Door middel van verschillende digitale methoden en grote datasets kunnen de onderzoekers van Data School dit inzichtelijk maken.

• Verantwoorde datapraktijken en AI. Een voorbeeld van een product dat in het verleden is ontwikkeld binnen deze onderzoekslijn is het IAMA: Impact Assessment Mensenrechten en Algoritmes.

De tweede onderzoekslijn waar Data School zich in specialiseert is data ethiek, oftewel, verantwoorde datapraktijken, algoritmes en AI. Met de invoering van de AVG in 2018 is meer bewustzijn gekomen voor de vraag ‘wat willen we eigenlijk met technologie?’ naast de vragen over technische mogelijkheden (‘wat kunnen we?’) en juridische grenzen (‘wat mogen we?’). Om organisaties ondersteuning te bieden bij hun ethische beraadslaging heeft Data School in 2016 De Ethische Data Assistent (DEDA) ontwikkeld, dat vandaag de dag nog steeds door een groot aantal (overheids)organisaties gebruikt wordt. Daarnaast is in de zomer van 2021 het Impact Assessment Mensenrechten en Algoritmes (IAMA) gepubliceerd, dat sturing geeft aan ethische afweging omtrent algoritmes die mogelijk een grote impact hebben op mensenrechten. De inzichten die Data School opdoet in het veld, worden vertaald naar academische output over de impact die digitalisering heeft op openbaar bestuur, democratie en publieke ruimte. Dit is de onderzoekslijn waaraan de student-assistent voornamelijk zal bijdragen.

The Saxo Institute, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen (UCPH), has announced an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP) with a focus on multilingual historical texts from 1600 to 1900. The position is full-time and fixed-term for 2 years starting from 1 February 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary research team in the context of the DFF Sapere Aude project Racialized Motherhood. This team works to advance understanding of the diachronic development of gendered and racialized language in historical documents produced between 1600 to 1900.

For whom?

Applications from highly qualified candidates with a strong background in NLP and a keen interest in applying their expertise to collaborative historical research on Atlantic colonial history are welcomed.

The postdoc who gets this position will be based at the University of Copenhagen, but the project is a collaboration that also includes Erasmus University Rotterdam. Thus, the postdoc work location is somewhat flexible, and researchers based in the Netherlands are highly encouraged to apply.

Het Centre for Digital Humanities (CDH) zoekt van 1 juni tot 1 december 2024 een collega communicatie en onderwijscoördinatie in verband met een zwangerschapsverlof. Reageren kan t/m 26 maart 2024.

Wat ga je doen?

Je komt te werken in een professioneel en enthousiast team. We zien en spreken elkaar regelmatig, digitaal en op locatie. Je bent verantwoordelijk voor alle interne en externe communicatie-uitingen van het CDH. Je vindt het leuk om te schrijven en treedt op als redacteur van de CDH-website. Tijdens je dienstverband heb je de mogelijkheid om een eigen project op te pakken in de vorm van bijvoorbeeld een interviewreeks, een korte informatieve video, etc. Daarnaast ben je (mede)verantwoordelijk voor het coördineren en organiseren van het CDH-onderwijsprogramma. Verder bestaan de taken uit:

• nieuwsberichten en evenementen schrijven en plaatsen op de CDH-website, intranet en corporate site (waar nodig in afstemming met communicatiecollega’s);
• maandelijkse nieuwsbrieven samenstellen en versturen, waarbij er ook veel ruimte is voor eigen contentproductie;
• promotie van CDH-uitingen en evenementen;
• lezingen en workshops organiseren binnen het CDH-onderwijsprogramma: afstemmen met sprekers en docenten, doorsturen van course manuals, communicatie met de deelnemers, aansturing van de praktische organisatie door het CDH-secretariaat (catering, zalen, deelnemersregistraties, wachtlijst bijhouden, etc.), feedback verzamelen;
• de CDH-LinkedInpagina en website onderhouden en optimaliseren;
• contact onderhouden met samenwerkingspartners van het CDH elders in de faculteit.

Wat breng je mee?

We zoeken een collega die goed het overzicht kan bewaren en het geen probleem vindt om snel te schakelen tussen verschillende taken. Je bent zelfstandig, maar kan ook goed samenwerken in een klein team. Verder breng je het volgende mee:

• minimaal hbo-werk- en -denkniveau;
• een opleiding op het gebied van communicatie en/of ervaring binnen dit vakgebied;
• uitstekende communicatieve- en schriftelijke uitdrukkingsvaardigheden in het Nederlands en in het Engels;
• ervaring met CMS-systemen zoals WordPress en Drupal, en mailingsoftware zoals Maileon;
• organisatietalent en organisatiesensitiviteit;
• nieuwsgierigheid en het vermogen om door te vragen;
• werkervaring binnen een academische organisatie en/of affiniteit met digital humanities is een pre.

Wat bieden wij?

Wij bieden:

• een functie voor bepaalde tijd van 1 juni tot 1 december 2024;
• een werkweek van 24 tot 28 uur, waarvan ongeveer 60% communicatietaken en 40% onderwijscoördinatie;
• een bruto maandsalaris van minimaal € 3.072,- tot maximaal € 4.103,- bij een fulltime dienstverband (schaal 8 van de cao Nederlandse Universiteiten); 
• 8% vakantiegeld en een eindejaarsuitkering van 8,3%; 
• een pensioenregeling, gedeeltelijk doorbetaald ouderschapsverlof en flexibele arbeidsvoorwaarden op basis van de cao Nederlandse Universiteiten.

Binnen de geesteswetenschappen wordt in toenemende mate gebruikgemaakt van gedigitaliseerde gegevens en geavanceerde tools om deze data te bewerken en analyseren. Om onderzoek en onderwijs op dit gebied te ondersteunen is aan de faculteit Geesteswetenschappen van de Universiteit Utrecht een Centre for Digital Humanities (CDH) ingericht, waarmee bestaande activiteiten versterkt en gebundeld worden. Zo worden in het Research Software Lab applicaties ontwikkeld op het vlak van onder andere tekst- en datamining, taalkunde, filosofie, taal- en literatuurwetenschappen en geschiedenis. Daarnaast worden in de labs van het Institute for Language Sciences experimentele voorzieningen geboden ter ondersteuning van taalkundig onderzoek met proefpersonen, zoals een fonetisch lab, babylab, eye-tracking lab en EEG/ERP-faciliteiten. Bij de Data School worden onder meer data ethiek en publieke debatten op sociale media onderzocht. De infrastructuur die al deze activiteiten mogelijk maakt wordt gebouwd en beheerd door de backoffice van het CDH.

Voor de ondersteuning van de ketens Centre for Digital Humanities (CDH) en Onderwijsondersteuning en Studentzaken (OSZ) zoekt de faculteit Geesteswetenschappen van de Universiteit Utrecht een management/-office- & communicatieassistent. In deze functie zul je beide organisatieonderdelen ondersteunen. Je kunt reageren tot uiterlijk 15 januari 2024.

Jouw takenpakket:

• Je bent een toegankelijk aanspreekpunt voor praktische vragen van de collega’s van beide afdelingen.
• Je ondersteunt bij indiensttreding, afscheid, jubilea en pensioen van collega’s. Daarnaast heb je een belangrijke rol in het organiseren van sociale activiteiten van de teams zoals bijvoorbeeld uitjes of borrels.
• Je maakt notulen en actie- en besluitenlijsten bij overleggen.
• Je verzorgt secretariële en organisatorische ondersteuning voor het hoofd OSZ en de directie CDH, zoals o.a. agendabeheer en organiseren van bijeenkomsten en overleggen.
• Je ondersteunt de CDH-communicatiemedewerker: het zelf produceren van content, redigeren/vertalen van content, bijhouden en doorplaatsen van berichten, het meehelpen bij het bijhouden van de CDH-website en socials, en het onderhouden van de OSZ-intranetpagina.
• Je verzorgt diverse bestellingen zoals ICT-middelen, bloemen, boeken, kantoorartikelen, etc.
• Je draagt zorg voor de meldingen in het pand en het monitoren hiervan.

Daarnaast voer je voor het CDH de volgende taken uit:

• Je houdt het mailverkeer in diverse mailboxen (beantwoorden algemene/terugkerende vragen en vragen over het onderwijsprogramma bij.
• Je ondersteunt bij het onderwijsprogramma (catering bestellen, bijhouden registraties/afmeldingen, uitsturen cursusmaterialen en feedbackformulieren, etc.).
• Je helpt bij de organisatie en promotie van evenenementen, zoals lezingen, een nationale netwerkdag of een conferentie.

Naast de bovenstaande taken is er ook ruimte om andere werkzaamheden naar je toe te trekken. De ideale kandidaat voor deze functie werkt zelfstandig, is daadkrachtig, zeer proactief en is bereid om complexe zaken aan te pakken. Je beweegt je soepel door verschillende organisatiestructuren, kunt snel schakelen en hebt een flexibele en positieve instelling. Affiniteit met een wetenschappelijke omgeving is een pre.

Profiel

Wat breng je mee:

• Je hebt mbo-/hbo- denk- en werkniveau.
• Je hebt enkele jaren ervaring in een functie als managementassistente, communicatiemedewerker of secretaresse.
• Je hebt een uitstekende beheersing van de Nederlandse taal en een goede beheersing van het Engels.
